Why connect to your sensuality?
“Each of us has that native, embodied wisdom-a wild, untamed, undomesticated body-mind and heart that knows what is true for us. This looks and feels different for each woman, and no two are ever alike. It guides our passion, whispers in our ears with longing, and reveals itself when we allow the natural genius of our bodies to show us the way” - from ‘The Wild Woman’s Way’ by Michaela Boehm
Mmmmmm, how does this quote make you feel? A friend was convinced I’d already read the book this came from as all the things I’ve been talking about recently are mentioned in The Wild Woman’s Way by Michaela.
As my practice has evolved I’ve found myself guided by an inner knowing that wanted to be expressed. I would start my yoga asana practice and naturally fall into flowing spinal movements, feeling a sense of openness flowing through me. One element of why I love yoga is because it makes my body feel good. I have a place I can turn to when my body feels tight, disconnected and in need of care. Too much rigidity in yoga doesn’t work for me. I need flow. I need deep breaths, deep sighs and love. I love this practice and as the years roll by it’s inevitable it will develop, morph and then re-morph again.
What I know right now is that a sensual practice brings me home to myself. It makes me feel like a goddess to stroke my skin. I feel fully alive and connected to my body when I allow innate movement to ripple through me. It’s an opportunity to move away from the rational mind and drop into the body. The more I practice this the more I feel drawn to express sensuality in other forms; the way I dress, the kisses I share, the music I listen to. Every moment is actually an opportunity to be sensual. I know a lot of people associate sensuality as sex but I only see that as a small part of it. For me, sensuality is about deep intimacy with oneself and secondly, others.
When I pepper energetic, sensual practices into my weekly yoga classes I see students shine brightly in their individual expressions, it’s beautiful to behold. I love to provide an opportunity for people to express what feels good for them. This is what I hope to transmit in my teachings. No one will ever know your body better than you do. The most intimate relationship you’ll ever have is with yourself.
So where to begin if you’re curious about a sensual practice? I’d suggest putting on a piece of beautiful music that you love, closing your eyes and just allowing the music to flow through you until you feel a desire to move. Let yourself go. I’ve created a playlist of my current favourite sensual songs here.
I’ll be holding the first creative expression of everything I talk about here on Saturday 14th December at Shanti Vida in Barcelona. Awaken Your Senses workshop is a deep dive into each of the senses to allow you to connect to your inner wisdom & natural expression. If you’re curious to know more head here.
With love,
Alice
